Nesky safety notice 02-2026 Paddle storage during rescues

This is our second safety team notice, focusing on paddle storage during rescues.

I've uploaded the article as a file for your review; it is also available to view on the club members Facebook page with additional video footage of the paddle being entangled in the kayaks spray deck.

The video demonstrates how a paddle stored under deck elastics can become tangled with spray deck map elastics, making exiting your kayak difficult, especially if you capsize. A still of this hazard is shown in the attached document.

This video shows how easily the paddle can turn and end up tangling with the map loops, and on this occasion blocking access to the spraydeck release loop.

Safety Notice - Boot laces snagged on foot pegs preventing exit from kayak

It’s been brought to my attention that one of our members had an issue exiting their kayak due to the laces on their boots snagging on the foot pegs.

If you are wearing the likes of Palm Gradient boots or similar you might want to consider following the advice given in the attached video link. This will hopefully prevent you from being trapped in your kayak, or getting snagged while wading ashore.

Basically it involves replacing bulky knots with plastic dual hole spring cord locks and tucking the loose ends of your laces into your boots thereby removing the snag hazard.
